The X-Men were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Chris Claremont is best known for his work on Marvel Comics' The Uncanny X-Men, during which time it was the bestselling comic in the Western Hemisphere he has sold more than 100 million comic books to date. Though the opposing mutants share some tangential similarities with both activists, the characters were in fact based on two famous Israeli Prime Minsters David Ben Gurion and Menachem Begin. ![]() This rumor, pervasive as it is, is unfortunately just that.
